Chapter Sixteen
âWhat are you going to do?â
John looked over at Flynn, who was scrubbing his dirt-encrusted hands at the kitchen sink. It was his busiest time, heâd told him. Spring, when everything was coming to life.
And realizing itâs time to go crazy.
John remembered his friendâs words, spoken wryly, but with a gleam of anticipation in his eyes. Not the fire heâd seen when they were on a mission, but a quieter, happier sort of shine. Bringing life instead of taking it. He supposed that was what had drawn Flynn to it. Heâd been through such hell, it had to be an easing of it to coax new life out of the earth.
Arenât you waxing philosophic....
He knew it was to keep himself from thinking about Jenny. The week since heâd seen her had seemed an eternity, and heâd spent it doing little more than reading and running, in between crashing on Flynnâs couch. They were the only two escapes heâd found, and the running only worked if he kept himself on the edge of hitting the wall. And an endless span of the same stretched out before him, a prospect so grim he couldnât deal with it yet. He was a fool; heâd let himself get his hopes up when all along heâd known better. Jenny might understand, might even forgive him, but there was no picking up where theyâd left off, not after heâd hurt her so badly.
He watched Flynn for a moment longer before he asked, âDid you always know? That you had this...green thumb?â
Flynn shrugged as he rinsed his hands, then reached for the towel on the sink. âI always knew I liked it. Took me a while to get past caring what other peopleâespecially other guysâthought about it. Growing food they got. Flowers, not so much.â
John let out a muffled snort. âIâd like to see somebody make a snide remark now.â
âMost donât, usually, funnily enough.â
âThey probably sense you could take them out without a blink.â
âI hope not,â Flynn said quietly.
John studied the man who was his brother in all but the blood sense. âYouâve truly put it behind you, havenât you?â he said softly.
âAs much as is possible, I hope.â He turned around, neatly folding and putting down the towel. Leaned back against the counter. âEspecially with my daily reminder.â
It took John a moment to realize he meant his face; he rarely even thought about it anymore when he saw him, except to wish, as he always did, that heâd gotten there that split second sooner.
âStop,â Flynn said. John blinked. âIt was not your fault. If anything, it was mine. I should have realized what Hamdi was going to pull. He was never going to go quietly.â
It played back in his head then, the dirty, cringing terrorist in the back of the Zodiac suddenly erupting into motion, Flynn jumping to stop him, and both of them going over the stern. Hamdi had been killed instantly, but John would have let him die anyway, without a qualm; in fact, he had the wistful hope sharks frequented the areaâafter he got Flynn out of the water.
